Before there were video games there were board games. If you are not too old to remember, these are games that are played on a table with pieces that you move around usually by throwing a dice. But there are different ones that add versatile game mechanics.
It was a time when you didn’t need an expensive console or a graphic card to enjoy your time. The only thing you need is a flat surface, a game set, and friends to play with.
Here are some of the more popular ones that have survived until today.
Cards Against Humanity
This is a game aimed at adults, particularly because of the phrases printed on the cards.
Every person takes turns in being a judge by laying a card on the table with a word or a starting phrase. Other players need to finish the sentence with the cards they have that include other phrases.
The point is being funny and unique. The judge will then choose the person with the best answer and they get the point. A game that will result in lots of laughs and probably some awkward phrases in the end.
Now this one requires something more than just moving pieces on aboard. It requires flexibility and being able to control your body. A mat with colorful circles is placed down on the floor and assignments are drawn where one needs to place their hand or foot.
With four players competing at the same time things can get twisted really fast and quite literally. Whoever falls first loses.
Now, this is already serious! The goal of the game Risk is to conquer the world and in order to do that, you have to have a good strategy and a little bit of luck.
You start from a certain territory and move your way around by conquering as much ground as you can.
But, other players with the same goal are there as well. They also compete in the same endeavor.
Clashing with your friends’ army will determine the ultimate winner and the champion of the world.
One of the more legendary games which are recognized with the cry “You sunk my battleship!” this game is played one on one.
You need to compete against your friend by shooting at specific coordinates in order to sink their entire fleet.
It is a try and error game as you try to correctly hit the place where your friend has hidden its fleet of ships. But be careful, they are trying to do the same to you.
The game that teaches you the value of money and real-estate, Monopoly is definitely one of the most recognizable board games ever invented. The goal of the game is to obtain as much property as you can and earn money.
In order to do that you need to make sure that you’re rival goes bankrupt. The game has also spawned the phrase get-out-of-jail-free card.
